What is Simpler Recycling?

Simpler Recycling, a legislation in the England, was created to standardise how we recycle waste across all regions.

The aim is to make recycling straightforward, reduce waste going to landfill, and increase our recycling rates.

In March 2025, businesses with 10 or more employees were legally required to follow these rules.

In March 2026, Simpler Recycling will also be applied to households, helping increase recycling rates.

Then, finally, in March 2027, businesses with fewer than 10 employees will have to follow these rules. By this date, everyone should be compliant across England.

At Waste Managed, our aim is to help all businesses understand Simpler Recycling and make sure everyone is compliant.

We focus on helping businesses that operate across the whole of the UK, making sure they stay compliant with any new legislation that may affect the different nations.

The information in this guide does not address household requirements;

What bins do I need to be compliant with the legislation?

Under Simpler Recycling, Businesses are required to separate their waste into the 4 main waste streams:

General Waste

Dry-Mixed Recycling

Glass Recycling

Food Waste

However, other waste streams, such as clinical waste, sharps, and sanitary waste, will still require dedicated containers. If your business produces any of these types of waste, it is still a legal requirement to separate them correctly.

Who does Simpler Recycling apply to?

The Simpler Recycling legislation affects every single type of business in the UK, such as Cafes, Gyms, Dentists, Schools, Offices, Beauty Salons and more.

The Simpler Recycling start date was March 2025 for businesses with 10 or more employees across England.

On the 31st of March 2027, Simpler Recycling will apply to all English businesses, no matter the size. This means businesses with fewer than 10 employees will be impacted. This will ensure recycling is standardised across all businesses in England.

Businesses in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland already follow specific recycling legislation for their region.

In Scotland, similar waste segregation requirements are already in place, with enforcement carried out by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA).

In Wales, legislation was implemented in 2024 to enforce the separation of waste. The Welsh government has imposed additional requirements, including separate streams for paper, card, metal, plastics, cartons, unsold textiles, and small waste electrical items.

Businesses in Northern Ireland are required to separate recycling waste such as paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, and metals. They focus on preventing recyclable waste from being disposed of in general waste.

Why preparing for Simpler Recycling matters

Businesses can no longer rely on just having a general waste bin; they now must introduce dry mixed recycling, glass, and food bins.

Bin suppliers and drivers will refuse to collect waste if any of it is contaminated, and charges may still apply for the collection, as the fault lies with the customer. In addition, further disruption could occur if the issue is not resolved, impacting future collections. It could also leave businesses liable for penalties such as fines.

The government is taking a firm stance on sustainable changes; Simpler Recycling legislation is an important part of protecting our environment and future generations.
