Skip hire & collection service

If your business produces more waste than a wheelie bin can hold, or waste types that don’t suit a bin at all, such as big and bulky offcuts, rubble, or anything that needs lifting rather than wheeling to the curb, you may want to take out a commercial skip hire.

If this sounds like the right choice for your waste solution, Waste Managed can help. Our team can assess what you produce, how much, and how often, and then recommend the right bin size for your setup. Collections can be arranged as a one-off, weekly, fortnightly, monthly, or as a schedule built specifically around your business or site, all of which can be adjusted to match your waste flow.

Skip collection frequency & waste capacity

  • Collection Frequency: one off, weekly, fortnightly, or monthly

  • Capacity: mini skip has 3,058L and a builder’s skip has about 6,116L

  • Lockable Lids: no

  • Number of Wheels: none

Commercial skip dimensions & weight allowance

Skips are sturdy and practical waste management solutions. We offer 5 different types of commercial skips, including mini skips, midi skips, builder’s skips, and Roll-on-Roll-off (RoRo) bins.

Mini Skips

A mini skip holds the equivalent of around 40 bin bags, which makes it a good fit for office clear-outs and small refits.

Dimensions & Weight Allowance

  • Width: 1.3m
  • Depth: 1.8m
  • Height: 0.9m
  • Weight limit: up to 2 tonnes

Midi Skips

This is a step up for mixed waste from medium-sized projects, without moving straight to a full builder’s skip.

Dimensions & Weight Allowance

  • Width: 1.5m
  • Depth: 2.4m
  • Height: 1.1m
  • Weight limit: up to 4 tonnes

Builder’s Skips

Builder’s skips are the standard choice for rubble, soil and heavier construction waste.

Dimensions & Weight Allowance

  • Width: 1.6m
  • Depth: 3.0m
  • Height: 1.2m
  • Weight limit: up to 8 tonnes

Large Skips

Large skips suit bulkier loads, such as furniture, packaging and mixed demolition waste.

Dimensions & Weight Allowance

  • Width: 1.8m
  • Depth: 3.6m
  • Height: 1.5m

Roll On-Roll Off (RoRo) Skips

For projects beyond what a standard skip can hold, a RoRo hire covers the 20 to 40-yard range.

20 Yard Skips

A 20-yard RoRo skip takes around 220 to 240 bin bags and up to 8 tonnes

40 Yard Skips

A 40-yard RoRo skip takes up to 460 bags and 14 tonnes

Commercial Skip Regulations

When you hire a skip, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Skip Permit

A skip permit may be required depending on where your skip is located.

Private Land

No permit is required if your skip sits on private land, such as your driveway, yard or building site.

Public Road

If put on a public road or pavement, you will need a council skip licence to do so. You may also need to attach safety lights and place traffic cones or markings on or around the skip. This could include:

  • Reflective markings
  • Traffic cones
  • Night-time safety lamps
  • The name and telephone number of the skip hire company

If the required safety lights and markings aren’t adhered to, you could be fined up to a maximum penalty of £1,000.

Waste Transfer Note

Every time non-hazardous waste leaves your site, a Waste Transfer Note has to be completed too, a legal requirement under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, and both parties need to keep a copy for at least two years.

When you hire a commercial skip with us, we make sure to handle all paperwork as part of the service, not an extra step for you to manage.

Types Of Businesses That Use Commercial Skip Hire

Commercial skip hire is essential for any large businesses that produce waste that is normally too bulky or heavy for standard bins. This includes construction sites where a lot of rubble needs to be disposed of, industrial businesses and manufacturers that produce a lot of packaging waste and offcuts, and even hotelsretail fit-outs and office that require larger containers for clearances and refurbishments.

What Can Go In A Commercial Skip?

Most non-hazardous business waste can go in a commercial skip, but a handful of materials need to follow a different waste disposal route.

What Can Go In

Most general business waste is accepted, provided they’re not on the restricted list below. Examples include:

  • General waste
  • Construction rubble, timber and concrete
  • Packaging and cardboard
  • Metal
  • Soil and green waste

Non-upholstered furniture

What Can’t Go In

A small number of materials need specialist handling and are therefore not allowed to be disposed of using a standard skip. Examples include:

  • Hazardous waste (such as asbestos, chemicals, paint and batteries)
  • WEEE and electrical items
  • Tyres
  • Plasterboard in large quantities
  • Upholstered furniture and mattresses

If you need to dispose of any of these separately, our commercial waste guide and our guide to choosing bins for each waste type cover the right route for what’s left over.

What Our Experts Say

Choosing the right skip size comes down to what you’re actually throwing away, and how much of it there is. Getting this wrong can see waste going down the wrong disposal streams. This can cause your waste to pile up if your containers aren’t large enough or aren’t collected frequently enough, but it can also cause many disposal pipeline difficulties too.”  – Kelvin Croney, Chief Commercial Officer

FAQs

A commercial skip is a larger skip built for businesses and industries that generate substantial amounts of waste. They range from 4-yard mini skips all the way up to large roll-on roll-off options, utilised by businesses from small offices that need help to clear-out or dispose of waste during a refurbishment, up to an industrial-scale building site that needs to dispose of rubble and all other accepted waste types.

It depends on what you’re disposing of and how much you produce on a regular basis. A mini or midi skip suits small clearance projects and general office waste, while a RoRo is built for large-scale demolition or industrial jobs. If you’re not sure, our team can recommend a size based on what you produce.

Commercial skip hire is sized and scheduled for business waste volumes, and it often comes with compliance documentation, such as Waste Transfer Notes. Domestic skip hire tends to be smaller-scale, used for one-off household projects rather than ongoing business waste.
