Office Waste Regulations
Businesses are legally responsible for ensuring their office waste is disposed of safely and responsibly, and in compliance with waste legislation. As regulations change and evolve, it can be hard for offices to keep up. By staying informed with the latest requirements, offices can ensure they stay compliant, avoid costly fines, and enhance their environmental performance.
The biggest change currently being introduced to businesses in England is Simpler Recycling. This simplifies and standardises the way waste should be separated and collected by businesses. On the 31st March 2025 the law changed meaning businesses with 10 or more employees are required to separate certain recyclable materials from general waste. This includes: paper/card, plastic, glass, metal, and food waste where suitable. Once separated, these items must be collected separately from general waste to ensure correct recycling.
Rules will extend to businesses with less than 10 employees from 31 March 2027. All workplaces will need to understand how they will be affected by Simpler Recycling, and make changes where necessary.
