How To Save Money On Glass Waste In Wakefield?

  1. Make sure that no recyclable materials are being placed into general waste. Landfill charges can be up to 50% higher than recycling, so it’s better to keep the green in your accounts and in the environment.
  2. If you have space, consider using a larger waste bin. If the glass items are clean and free of contamination they will be able to be left out for longer periods of time. That means less collections and less charges for your glass collections!

Make sure to lock your glass disposal bins overnight to prevent people from fly tipping into your bin and contaminating the contents.
  3. Make sure you choose a trusted, registered waste management service provider. Some businesses have fallen victim to unregistered waste handlers who have even practiced fly tipping recycling materials.

By choosing a registered waste handler you will avoid incurring fines and have piece of mind with your glass collections so you can focus on the more important aspects of your business without the worry of any unwanted surprises.

Can I Put Glass In The Recycling Bin?

If one of your bar staff has been shooting bottles into the bin like he’s Michael Jorden, then the answer is no. Broken glass cannot be recycled with mixed waste and may even result in the bin not being emptied if there is too much and poses a risk to handlers.

Mixed recycling collectors will often allow unbroken glass to be placed in mixed recycling bins. However, they do advise against this. The main reason is that even if the contents of the bin have been handled carefully, the glass rubbish may still break during the recycling collection, transportation or even at the treatment centre.

This means that the waste cannot be sorted or handled by hand and could potentially ruin an entire batch, meaning all that time and effort was for nothing.

So unbroken bottles can be placed into mixed recycling, but we advise against it if you have space for an extra bin that you can make use of to ensure that any glass collections are treated and processed instead of going to landfill.

The LGA said that 525,000 tonnes of recycling materials that had been collected in 2020 was removed from processing and treatment due to contamination alone.

*For domestic recycling there may be an exception for broken glass collections. You should check with your local council on their .GOV page for info regarding your area.
