What happens to the waste material after collection?
Cardiff has successfully eliminated all active landfill sites and adopted a more environmentally friendly approach to waste management.
In collaboration with Viridor and four other local councils, they established the Energy Recovery Facility (ERF).
Annually, the ERF processes up to 350,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste by incinerating it, generating enough energy to power approximately 50,000 households.
A key aspect of this facility is its commitment to environmental safety. All fumes and smoke produced during incineration undergo thorough cleaning (scrubbing) in the chimney stack before being released into the atmosphere.
This ensures that no harmful pollutants are emitted, mitigating any potential negative impact on air quality. There is now a new hazardous waste treatment facility open in the area to further prevent any waste from ending up at landfill.
Moreover, the ERF’s sustainability efforts go beyond energy generation. The remaining bottom ash from the incineration process finds a valuable purpose as aggregate material for road surfaces.
This approach results in a fully sustainable process, leaving no waste behind and actively contributing to more eco-friendly road construction.
By implementing the Energy Recovery Facility in Splott, Cardiff has demonstrated a progressive and responsible waste management strategy.
The collaborative efforts with Viridor and other local councils highlight the commitment to creating a cleaner and greener environment.
This project serves as an excellent model for other regions seeking effective waste disposal solutions while prioritising environmental protection and energy efficiency.
